Photo Journal Days 1 & 2

So, we're doing photo journals for our photo class (over the span of 2 weeks) and I kinda forgot to post yesterday, so here are the pictures from yesterday and today [unfortunately, not the best].

So, I was about to start eating dinner last night when I remembered I needed to snap a picture and what best opportunity than to take a picture of the junk college students eat! So, I snapped a picture of my microwaved burritos...not so creative, but hey, it's a college student's life.




Another aspect of a college student's life is the ginormous amount of homework that piles up! So, here is a picture of my textbooks...I've got homework to do in about maybe half of these books...and scripture study on top of it all.

...stands for self camera. Which was kind of the assignment this week---self portrait. Can I say I fail? I fail. This one was tough for two reasons: 1)the technicalities of it and 2) the posing [which I suck at]. Anyway, here they are.

In a way this picture kind of really represents me. Plain background = the boring me. The mexi shirt and braids = my ethnicity. Glasses = my nerdy self. Not looking at the camera = shyness or my "I don't care about you" attitude, just kidding. Yeah, maybe you can get some other interpetations from it? I don't know.

This one was a contender. Also, it may look like I used a flash for these pictures, but I did not. They were taken in my bedroom with the blinds up and a blue bedsheet as my background...another reason why I fail.

It's an adventure!

Well, not really. This week's assignment was subject exploration. I kinda failed on this one. Too much procrastination and not enough exploration. So these pictures are somewhat similar in their set-up but different as you'll see why. So, with no further ado, I present....SoMo.

Kermy was going to be my first model, but he kind of was too tiny. So I threw this one in here for your viewing pleasure.

When the lights go down in the city...

...you have no light. Which almost happened to me today...which wouldn't have been good. Anyway, let's back track to last week's assignment, which was Light as the Subject. This one was kinda difficult cause I procrastinate too much and sunny days are random and sparce during Rexburg winters, but I made it work. Anyway, here are my light as subject photos:

I decided to try to do the salt and pepper shakers again...but, well, that didn't come out nearly as sweet as my last salt and pepper shaker picture...oh well.

This one is pretty sweet. I really like glass bottles (mostly because my poppa finds these sweet old school bottles on the sites he works at and he brings them home; one day I'll take a picture of the ones he has collected thus far) and so I took a picture of my coca-cola bottle. It was around 11:30 or noon, so the sun was kinda high and I didn't want to leave my apt. I just placed the bottle in the light (which happened to be showing on the floor, hence the table and chair legs in the background) and give kinda give a little starburst effect. [This is the only one that doesn't have a colored photo because this one was the original. I took with the the Monocrome option on my camera and didn't think about taking a colored photo until waaaaay after. So this one is special :)]




These next two gentlemen are my home teachers. This first one is Darrik. It was sunny yesterday and so we had some good light. The only thing I don't like about this picture is the bright highlight on the side of his face. I'm still trying to figure out how to adjust brightness and contrast when I'm editing and I was too afraid I'd mess it up, so I didn't do much to it. But yeah! Here's Darrik. [We tried going with the mood of remembrance; like when you're walking somewhere or sitting by yourself and you remember something funny or something that just brings your happiness and joy and you get that little smile. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.]

This funny guy here is Danny. At first we tried going with a serious feel since he's always smiling and joking around, but he couldn't do it (and I totally understood it, since I'm the same way.) I got quite a few good pictures of Danny, but this one was my favorite.

Because of Procrastination....

...you get a blogpost today. I'm procrastinating reading an assignment and thought I'd add some pictures from my latest assignment: Motion.


This first picture (original and greyscale) is the one I decided to go with. I unfortunately didn't think that my little pinwheel was captured well enough. You may be asking, "what pinwheel?" Well, get through this post and you'll see what I'm talking about. Anyway, here, I kind of capture a drop of water falling from the faucet spout. I also really like the black and white version of the picture :]

This picture (original and greyscale) is of water dripping off of the building next to my apartment building and the little water droplets were falling into ice, kind of making a little bowl. It's pretty sweet, I don't think my pictures do it justice. Anyway, here it is.

And here are my pinwheel pictures. Katie was so kind as to let me use her girls for this project. And I totally had fun with these girls!
This is Lily and her blue pinwheel. I left these in color cause they looked better that way.

This is Kaylee with her red pinwheel. When I asked her if she would let me take her picture she said, "only three." Hahaha She is so cute!

And this cute little girl is Riley! I just really loved her face in this one. I kinda wish that pinwheel was a dandelion or something.

DOF

So, for this week's assignment we delved into the world of DOF! Or for those who do not understand the language of the photographer, Depth of Field. Here, we have two example of shallow and deep. This first one is my shallow depth of field submission in it's original state and then in greyscale, because that's the way I had to turn it in.

I used my piggy bank that my uncle Marty and Julie gave me about two years ago. They said "here, it's for your college fund!" [Just in case you were wondering, it's the ginormous pig in the background] The tiny little pink pig in the foreground is a plastic little pig that I found in a package that was sent to me recently. My brother sent me some movies and a little keychain for my phone. I think he might be trying to say something with this little guy...hmm?

This next one isn't my favorite, but it's an example of the deep depth of field. You have more in focus for a greater length rather than having just the one subject in focus and the background being blurry. But anyway, one reason I don't like this is because it's boring. It's take on campus and obviously I saw it as something cooler in my mind than what actually came out. :/ Oh well, here are the original and greyscaled pictures.

This picture here was a contender for the shallow depth of field submission, but alas, the pigs beat out the aztec sun...er...salt and pepper shakers. Many of you may recognize these little guys. They were made by my younger brother, Matthew, and they are the only other aztec sun salt and pepper shakers made like this besides the set back in California.

1st Photo Assignment

So! Finally an update cause I have new cool pictures to add. Anyway, I'm taking a Black & White Photography class and we recently learned how to process, develop, and print our own pictures! It is totally fun and I plan on investing on getting a film SLR and hopefully having a darkroom in the home I live in, in the future.

Anyway, our first assignment was to just process and develop a roll of film and then make a print, but I don't have any pictures from that assignment. So the first real assignment was a free choice, and here are the two pictures I submitted.

This is my bestie, Gilmarie (pronounced: Jill-marie) and I had her pose looking out of the window. Personally, I think I printed it a little too dark but I still like the result that I got---I tried going with that look that they have in the old Addams Family movies with the light focused on Morticia's eyes; but as you can see, I ended up getting the light on all of her face, which is fine with me.

This one here (I also used Gil for) and she's holding some tiny paper origami stars.
